Underappreciated for decades, Puccini's La Fanciulla del West premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910. This revival from the 2010-11 season marked the centennial anniversary of the opera. Soprano Deborah Voigt sings the role of Minnie, the spirited saloon-keeper, alongside tenor Marcello Giordani as the mysterious Dick Johnson. Despite a few details that Puccini didn't get quite right about the American West, the music is fascinating, with maestro Nicola Luisotti bringing out its rich texture and complex harmonies. The production is by Giancarlo del Monaco.
Sung in Italian with English subtitles, the opera runs three hours, including intermission. All adults are welcome.
