[ONLINE] Cassatt, Morisot, Valadon: Women Painters in Paris with Janet Mandel

Tuesday, December 147:00—8:00 PMZoom

Despite their relative obscurity, many women painters reached impressive heights of creative achievement and professional success in 19th through early 20th century Paris. Art historian Janet Mandel’s lavishly illustrated talk will examine the lives and the works of three of these exceptional artists: Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot and Suzanne Valadon.

Between 1850 and the early 20th century, Paris was the center of the art world. Women artists from all over Europe and America arrived to join their French counterparts, where they took advantage of the museums, art academies, and dynamic urban life of the newly redesigned capital. Although not as celebrated as their male colleagues, these women took on modern subjects and experimented with scenes from private life, drawing upon their social difference as a source of artistic inspiration.
