The sculptor Augusta Savage became a star of the Harlem Renaissance, despite her daily encounters with the obstacles of racism, gender discrimination, and poverty. Her art celebrates African American culture, and her work as an educator and political activist catalyzed social change. Art Historian Janet Mandel’s illustrated talk will introduce you to this remarkable artist by exploring Savage’s lasting legacy and affecting works.
