Bicycle Thieves (Italy, 1948) shows us one frantic day in the life of a working man, desperate to find the stolen bicycle his job depends upon. Set in the bomb-battered streets of post-WWII Rome, director Vittorio de Sica’s film has long been considered a masterpiece of Italian neorealism. But it is also a universal story that still speaks to us, one teeming with life, energy, and emotion. This film is streaming for free on Kanopy.
