Jan Brogan has worked as a correspondent for the Boston Globe and as a staff reporter for the Worcester Telegram and The Providence Journal, where she won the Gerald Loeb award for distinguished financial writing. Her true crime debut, The Combat Zone: Murder, Race, and Boston’s Struggle for Justice, is about the 1976 murder of Harvard football player Andrew Puopolo in Boston’s old Combat Zone, the two trials that followed (with nearly opposite verdicts), and the impact the case had on the city and on criminal justice. The Combat Zone was nominated for both an Agatha and Anthony award for best non-fiction published in 2021.
